Chapter Meeting May 12, 2009 in Baltimore The State of Data Warehousing and the Impact of NIEM University of Baltimore, William H. Thumel Sr. Business Center (corner of Mt. Royal Ave and N. Charles St), walking distance from Baltimore Metro and AMTRAK Please see Calendar of Events for more information, or to register. Data warehouses have been expensive and complicated initiatives. The innovations they were meant to foster were often dwarfed by the time, cost and information exchange issues encountered in building them. Now is the time to rethink the data warehousing concept. Data warehousing must evolve with lessons learned, technology changes, and emerging standards. Addressing these successfully however is not trivial—each stakeholder operates with legacy technology, terminology, and data formats. Getting the right information to the right people all of the time requires new thinking–and new solutions–for government and business. Information exchange standards, such as the federal government’s National Information Exchange Model (NIEM), have become prominent foundations for helping organizations to develop, disseminate, and support enterprise-wide information sharing. NIEM, a partnership of the U.S. Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, helps agencies to effectively share critical information in emergency situations, as well as support their day-to-day operations. For government leaders and local agencies, NIEM provides the structure and proven methodologies to build and implement new data warehousing solutions. Join Jerry Dunaway from ASG Software Solutions and James Paat from Sypherlink as they discuss the value of data warehousing and best practices for standards-based information sharing.
